Villagers kill big cat, feast on its meat

Villagers kill big cat, feast on its meat
A group of villagers killed and skinned a panther and even feasted on its meat, at Koviri village of Saravakota mandal in Srikakulam district.

VISAKHAPATNAM: In an alarming incident that involves ecological concerns, a group of villagers killed and skinned a panther and even feasted on its meat, at Koviri village of Saravakota mandal in Srikakulam district. A fight broke out between villagers on meat sharing and that was when word reached forest officials who reached the spot and took three persons into custody.

The incident took place on Saturday but officials came to know of it only on Sunday. The three who were nabbed were identified as M Srinivas, S Govind and B Simhachalam. Officials are looking for more culprits involved in the killing of the big cat.

The villagers had reportedly set up an electric fence in violation of forest rules to trap the panther. After consuming the flesh, they buried the head in the fields to avoid detection by forest and police officials. Forest officials exhumed the head of the big cat from the fields and sent its remains to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad for forensic investigations and to establish the animal species. The skin and nails were reportedly missing.

A case has been registered under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Forest officials will begin penal action against the accused once they get the forensic report from the CCMB. Killing a big cat or any animal listed in Schedule H of the Forest Act carries a jail term up to seven years.

Panthers are at the receiving end as poachers and smugglers have their field day.
Confirming the incident to TOI, Sanjay Yalla, forest ranger officer at Pathapatnam in Srikakulam district, said a forest team went to the village on a tip-off. "It is probably a panther. The animal had strayed into the agricultural fields in the village, which is close to Odisha. With the help of Saravakota police, we took into custody three people. Investigation is on. More people will be picked up once the investigation is over," he said.

Putting up electric fence around agricultural fields is illegal. "The forest department has been paying hefty compensation to people in case wild animals damage crops or kill livestock," he said.

Indians to see 10.8% salary hike in 2015: Towers Watson

Indians to see 10.8% salary hike in 2015: Towers Watson
In India all employees — from production workers to executive directors — are set to have higher pay raises than last year.
MUMBAI: Employees in India are expected to see a 10.8 per cent salary hike in 2015, even as pay increases across Asia Pacific region are set to rise by an average 7 per cent in the coming year, says a report.

As per the Towers Watson 2014-15 Asia-Pacific salary budget planning report, which included 2,900 sets of responses received from over 300 different companies across a range of industry sectors and job grades from 20 countries, said Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam are set to lead the way with over 11% overall salary increases while India is placed at No.4 with an increase of 10.8%. However, a corresponding rise in inflation in the region implies that pay increases in 'real terms' will be eroded in the coming year, the report added.

As per the report, China rises to the top with a real salary increase of 5.2% after allowing for inflation, trailed by Pakistan (4.5%), Bangladesh (4.3%), Vietnam (4.1%) and Sri Lanka (3.8%). India drops down by two places to No.6 with a corresponding real increase of 3.5%.

In what is a clear indication of a positive economic sentiment, all 20 surveyed countries will witness an increase in 'regular salary reviews' in 2015 with a noteworthy reduction in the number of companies that opted for a 'salary freeze' or 'postponement' in the previous year. Timed to coincide with companies' budget planning process for 2015, the reports helps one understand the salary movements across various sectors and markets and provide companies with guidelines for their annual salary forecasting process.

"We foresee an increased economic growth in Asia Pacific in 2015 in light of a declining unemployment rate and rising GDP in the region. This, in turn, will lead to inflationary pressures that affect real salary increases. Indians will only see an effective salary increase that is one-third of the overall salary increase due to such pressures," said Sambhav Rakyan, data services practice leader, Asia Pacific at Towers Watson.

It said China (5.2%) and Vietnam (4.1%) will lead the way in East Asia for salary increases in 2015 after taking into account inflation, while Japan (0.6%) will see the smallest raises.

Across the region, employees will have pay raises equal to or higher than last year in percentage terms, with the exception of Taiwan, where the rate of increase will drop from 2.8% to 1.7% after inflation. In real terms, however, increases will be lower for 12 out of the 20 Asia Pacific countries covered in the survey. Hong Kong and Singapore are both set for an overall increase of 4.5% in 2015, unchanged from 2014, but after accounting for inflation, Singaporean employees will see a higher increase of 2.2% as compared to 0.9% in Hong Kong.

5 Lessons Entrepreneurs Should Learn From MUKESH AMBANI

Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in the country, can teach a lesson or two to everyone, especially budding entrepreneurs. But since, he is busy raking in the moolah, BI India decided to pick up five lessons that he can teach all.

Dream big!

The man inherited his father and India's iconic business leader Dhirubhai Ambani's genes when it comes to dreaming big. In 90s, Ambani, then in his 30s, had dreamt of becoming the largest producer of polyester fibre and yarn in the world and he actually did it. Today, RIL is the largest producer of polyester fibre and yarn in the world, with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum, beating the traditional producers from South Korea and Taiwan, who had dominated the business since 1970s.

Do more, say less!

The quote by Israelmore Ayivor is apt for Mukesh Ambani. The 57 year old likes to keep a low profile. He isn't keen on social dos and neither is he voicing opinions on important economic issues at events such as the World Economic Forum. But still, he is one of the most talked about personalities in the country. Ambani's focus has always been his business and this entrepreneur is credited for the creation of the world's largest petroleum refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat besides other successful ventures. Need we say more?

Depend on no one!

A feudal style of management is not the mantra today. And Mukesh Ambani realised it even before feudalism was out of the system. Ambani in an interview had said that he did not want "people carrying their wisdom in notebooks as if it some kind of secretive operations". While he has a trusted team of a few people, who have played a pivotal role in the growth of his empire , Ambani has always emphasized on the importance of being involved in one's own business. Well, no wonder he managed to create an empire with net worth of Rs1,76,766 crore in 2012-13.

Don't panic, stay strong!

Mukesh Ambani joined his father's business at a very young age. While he was still learning the nuances of the business, he lost his uncle and his father's business partner Rasikbhai in 1986. This was followed by Dhirubhai Ambani's stroke within five months of his uncle's death. Ambani then had to take his father's place and steered the company forward at a time when India still had Licence Raj.

Keep your eyes open

Mukesh Ambani keeps his eyes wide open when it comes to hunting for new ventures. During the announcement of Reliance Jio initiative, Ambani had clearly said, "Today I see a billion people as a billion potential consumers, an opportunity to generate value for them and to make a return for myself". With start-ups mushrooming in the country, Ambani has now turned his eye at it and will soon be seen mentoring technology start-ups that spawn billion-dollar businesses in the country.
